Microscopic Study of Enamel Demineralization Teeth During Orthodontic Treatment Using Pits and Fissures Sealants

Abstract


Objective: Assessed by stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy, the effect of a pit and fissure sealant in the prevention of enamel demineralization around orthodontic brackets after exposure of teeth to the demineralizing solution.
Methods: Ninety bovine mandibular incisor teeth recently extracted were randomly divided into three groups. In GI, the buccal surfaces of the teeth were conditioned and covered with adhesive around the orthodontic bracket. In GII, the buccal surfaces were also conditioned and orthodontic adhesive was applied only in the location where the bracket was glued (4 mm in diameter). It was applied the pit and fissure sealant around the bracket covering all the buccal surface exposed. In GIII, was treated with citric acid and glue the bracket with no protection around. After bonding, the teeth were immersed in demineralizing solution. Statistical analysis was performed using the ANOVA and Tukey test with significance level of 5% using the program Origin Pro 7.0.
Results: The enamel loss areas were different in the three groups (ANOVA, p less than 0.001). GII showed a significant reduction in the incidence of enamel demineralization (71.9%), while this reduction in GI was 38% when compared with group III (Tukey, p less than 0.001). The sealing of labial surface with pit and fissure sealants after bonding the orthodontic brackets resulted in a significant reduction in incidence of enamel demineralization (71.9%).
Conclusion: The treatment of vestibular tooth surface with sealant resulted in significant reduction of enamel demineralization in vitro.
