The Line of Care of Oral Health in the City of João Pessoa, PB, Brazil: An Analysis of Indicators

Abstract


Objective: To assess oral health indicators and their relationship with organization's network of oral health care at Joao Pessoa, Paraiba, Brazil.
Methodology: Dental procedures accomplished at 2005 to 2008, in Basic and Specialized Care network, were recorded and quantified through the database of the Brazilian Department of Health System (DATASUS) from Ambulatory Information Systems (SIA/SUS) and Information Systems (SIAB). Dental indicators were build according Brazilian Health Ministeries: 1) coverage of the first annual programmatic consultation, 2) Coverage of shares supervised toothbrushing, 3) Average individual basic procedures, and 4) Proportion of specialized dental procedures.
Results: It was observed that the actions of expansion of the municipal dental health coverage favored the increase of shares: in 2005, with 90 teams of Oral Health (ESB) and 01 Center for Dental Specialties (CEO) the average of the basic/specialized procedures per capita was 0.54/0.13 and in 2007 was 0.81/0.18 procedures.
Conclusion: Organization's action of oral health municipal network favored the improvement of population's access indicators in oral heath. A network organization supports the construction of a line and is prerequisite for the guarantee of access and continuity for a care line.
