Abstract

Objective: To evaluate whether the Pediatric Dentistry II Discipline allows establishing of a satisfactory relationship between the student and patient and parents and/or caregivers, as well as the satisfaction of the users.
Method: The study was conducted at the Dental School of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, MG, Brazil, in the 1st semester 2007. The sample included 19 undergraduate dental students from the 10th semester (Group I) and 50 users – father, mother or caregiver of the patients treated at the Pediatric Dentistry II Clinic (Group II). The volunteers answered the questions of 2 structured questionnaires. The descriptive analysis was made using the quantitative data from the closed questions. A quali-quantitative approach was used for the open questions.
Results: The analysis of the questionnaire answered by the students showed a favorable attitude for establishing a satisfactory and humane relationship with the patients and their parents and/or caregivers, facilitated by the presence and knowledge of the dental professors. As difficult factors were mentioned the lack of an effective participation of the parents in diet and oral hygiene control and the non-attendance to the treatment sessions. It was observed a high level of satisfaction with the treatment among the users. The users revealed a strong recognition of the students’ work, showing the fundamental role of the student for humanizing the treatment of the Discipline. The results obtained in this study will permit the improvement of the Discipline.
Conclusion: The Pediatric Dentistry II Discipline of the Dental Course of UFJF contributes to the formation of a humanized professional and provides satisfaction for the assisted community.
