Resumo

This article presents the emergence of complexity theory in sciences and in the field of International Relations (IR). The first part shows that the emergence of what is called the IR fifth debate finds its roots in an already old questioning and, hence, makes possible to clarify the notion of complexity. The second part shows how the transdisciplinary methodologies of complex systems are implemented in different issues related to International Relations. Finally, the interest of the approach and the perspectives opened up by the theory and the method of complex systems are discussed.
