PROCESS TRACING AS A MECHANISM FOR TRAJECTORY ANALYSIS: FROM SEPTEMBER 11th/ TO THE WAR ON TERROR AND THE WAY TO THE WAR OF IRAQ

The September 11th terrorist attack in the United States was an event responsible for provoking transformations in the country’s domestic and foreign policy. Besides the measures taken to fight terrorism on the so-called War on Terror, started by the George W. Bush government, the country also adopted policies according to which any country that was seen as giving support or not fighting against groups classified as terrorists were also classifieds as enemies. The present work has as its objective to demonstrate how this American policy resulting of the 2001 events was also responsible in influencing on the decisions that led to Iraq’s invasion in 2003. Insite this article, all the decisions that entailed Iraq’s invasion shall be analyzed. With this objective, the process tracing methodology shall be used to observe the 2001 to 2003 period and answer the question about the attack’s influence on the invasion.
