AN ANALYTICAL PROPOSAL FOR ISQUARES

Abstract

This article presents preliminary results from the Isquare Interdisciplinary Study, which uses the arts-informed method and, specifically, the "draw and write" technique, to answer the question "What is information?". Specifically, it investigates a) how people view the concept of information; b) how the visual conceptions of information differ between communities, disciplines, and academic levels; c) how the images relate to the definitions expressed in words. Through bibliographic research, it proposes an analytical-conceptual instrument for the isquares, a neologism in English by combining the words i (a shortened form of the word information) and square (due to the format 4,25" x 4,25" of the drawings), to be collected in the second year of research, at the Federal University of Cariri, Brazil. Based on the metatheoretical turns of information by Hartel (2019), from the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto, Canada, and creator of the isquare protocol, it presents general notions of information to be used in the interpretation of metaphors and other visual contents portrayed in the isquares. Categorized in a non-exclusive and not conclusive way, especially because of its qualitative nature, it lists information approaches based on traditional aspects of information (such as physics and cognitivism, which are centered on interest in the epistemic function of information in people's learning processes), as well as alternative points of view (such as the embodied and the contemplative, which are based on a holistic perception of contemporary information practices, which includes non-conventional or informal information contexts). Finally, it highlights the usefulness of the instrument both for the group of researchers in the Isquare Interdisciplinary Study and for beginners/students, professionals, and academics in the field of information, especially from Library and Information Science, which look for a broadened view of the informational phenomenon.
