Abstract

The birth of bioethics as applied ethics has its prominent element in the health dimension. The concept of health, in turn, would no longer be limited to human health, but rather to the health of the biosphere, since it was recognized that the illness of one party would cause the illness of the other party. In this purpose of expanding the ethical dimension to ensure the totality of life in the biosphere, different thinkers made their contribution. In this reflection, we want to highlight two of them: the American biochemist Van Rensselaer Potter, known as one of the fathers of bioethics, and the German philosopher Hans Jonas. In this sense, the problem to be faced in this article can be expressed as follows: how is bioethics as applied ethics, with emphasis on health, present in the thinking of Jonas and Potter? This is bibliographical research of an analytical-reflective nature. It is concluded that both Jonas and Potter recognize the threats to human life and the biosphere, and based on these dangers, they propose an expansion of ethical parameters in search of new wisdom to ensure future human and planetary survival with quality. This set of interdisciplinary knowledge recognizes the existence of a balance in the ecosystem. It is this balance that will ensure human health and the biosphere in an authentic, harmonious, and sustainable way in the future.

Doutor em Filosofia. Professor do Curso de Filosofia e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Bioética da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (PUCPR). Coordenador do Doutorado Internacional em Humanidades na parceria da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná com a Universidade Católica de Moçambique (Quelimane – África). Professor Visitante da Universidade Católica de Moçambique. Líder do grupo de pesquisa Bioética e Biotecnologia e membro dos grupos de pesquisa Bioética Ambiental e Hans Jonas. Membro da Sociedade Brasileira de Bioética. Membro da Cátedra Hans Jonas Brasil.

Diego Carlos Zanella, Universidade Franciscana (UFN)

Doutor em Filosofia e mestre em Bioética. Professor de Bioética e Humanidades da Universidade Franciscana (UFN). Coordenador do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ensino de Humanidades e Linguagens (PPGEHL). Membro do Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa com Seres Humanos (CEP) e da Comissão de Ética nos Uso de Animais (CEUA). Membro da Sociedade Brasileira de Bioética (SBB) e atual presidente da seção regional no Rio Grande do Sul (gestão 2020-2022).

Alberto Paulo Neto, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná

Doutor em Filosofia. Professor do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Bioética da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (PUCPR). Tem experiência na área da Filosofia, com ênfase em Ética e Filosofia Política, atuando nos temas destaque: Bioética e Direitos Humanos, Teorias da democracia, Teorias da justiça, Republicanismo e Liberalismo Político, Filosofia Política, Filosofia do Direito. Autores em destaque: Immanuel Kant, Jürgen Habermas, Ronald Dworkin e Philip Pettit.
