The discursive functioning of popular sayings in “Ensaio sobre a cegueira” by José Saramago

Abstract

This work aims at analyzing the recapture of discursive memories (PÊCHEUX, 2010) related to the popular sayings in the book Ensaio sobre a cegueira (Blindness) by José Saramago. We define popular sayings as utterances of commonly unknown authorship, recognized by their recurrence and social perpetuation, and intended to impart popular knowledge based on certain behaviors and happenings. Throughout the novel, we identified popular sayings that dialogue with happenings of the narrative and produce meaning effects both of returning and breaking with the already-said popular saying. Thus, subscribed to Discourse Studies (FERNANDES, 2008), we aimed at analyzing the discursive functioning of the discursive memories about the sayings that emerge as already-said and as news in Saramago’s plot. In order to do so, we selected popular sayings and their meanings in and outside of the book. Next, trough the use of analysis arrays (SANTOS, 2004), we demonstrate how the sayings emanate discourses that encounter one another in the social field and involve not only non-exclusively linguistic issues but also sustain discourses of groups through the discursive memory, which also dialogue with the attitudes of characters of the novel.
