Juana Azurduy and the clashes of history

The role performed by native women in the conflicts for independence is seldom emphasized, and their relevance in this process is even less known. It is in the realm of proposals for historical reparations concerning contributions, often decisive, during moments of significant social change in Abya Yala, that this article highlights the figure of Juana Azurduy. The main objective is to present this guerrilla fighter who fought for independence from Alto Peru, now known as Bolivia, to Argentina. Various other issues are disclosed, such as the lack of acknowledgment of the featured heroine and criticisms regarding some tributes paid to her. The theoretical framework is based on discussions presented by Ulloa (2009) and Hennes (2010). The goal of this investigation is to emphasize that the rescue of such important personalities, like Juana Azurduy, is essential for the construction of a society that values gender equity and the reduction of social inequalities originating primarily from the aftermath of colonialism and the presence of machismo (male chauvinism), highly evident in our territory.
